Gerhard Lang produced the first printed calendar in large quantities in 1908 – a sheet with 24 pictures to cut out, drawn by Ernst Kepler. He got the idea from his mother, who had hung 24 pastries on a cardboard for him as a child. Doors to open were only added around 1920. So it took a good hundred years before someone thought of port wine.

Why does port wine work better in the calendar than still wine?

Because it outlasts the bottle.

This is not a marketing argument, but chemistry. Port wine is fortified with brandy during fermentation. This stops the yeast, leaves residual sugar in the wine, and brings it to around 20 percent alcohol by volume.Alcohol and sugar are both preservatives. 1. How many of the 24 wines are truly different? Many calendars on the market contain 12 varieties, each repeated. Some come with eight. This is rarely stated on the front and almost always in the fine print. 24 different wines are more complex to assemble and the only reason why a calendar differs from a six-pack.

2. One house or a collection? Both are legitimate. A calendar with wines from different houses shows you the range of the Douro. Sooner than you'd like. For limited calendars, September to October is the realistic deadline, not December 1st.

The reason is simple: Anyone who bottles 24 different wines into small bottles and sorts them by hand into a box does not produce on demand. The edition is set months in advance. For calendars from small producers, November is regularly the month when you have to explain to a customer that there are no more available.

That's why pre-ordering is almost always the more economical option, and it's not a trick: Those who order in the summer relieve the retailer of the risk of being left with unsold stock.
