Description

The Castanha Martaínha is one of Portugal's most renowned chestnut varieties – better known to us as Marroni: sweet, shiny, and pleasantly easy to peel. It originates from the municipality of Sernancelhe in the heart of the protected designation of origin (DOP) Soutos da Lapa, a region with a long tradition of chestnut cultivation. The chestnuts are natural, 100% Portuguese, and naturally gluten-free.

Chestnuts are a seasonal natural product: Harvested in the fall, fresh chestnuts are only available then. Therefore, we offer the Castanha Martaínha only in the winter season, as long as the current harvest lasts.

During the season, the Marroni are fresh in our Swiss warehouse and are immediately available for delivery. The quantity per harvest is limited.

Available in 1 kg, 3 kg, and 5 kg. When stored correctly, cool at 2–5 °C, the Marroni last about two months. They taste best roasted, cooked, or in autumn dishes – how to roast them in the oven or pan is detailed in the guide Roasting Chestnuts like in Portugal.

Häufige Fragen zu Marroni

How long do fresh chestnuts last?

If stored correctly, around two months. Keep them cool at 2–5 °C and dry, preferably in the refrigerator in a linen bag or box. Never in plastic: This leads to condensation and thus to mold.

How do I roast chestnuts in the oven?

Score the curved side crosswise, sprinkle coarse salt over it, and roast at 200 °C top/bottom heat for 20 to 25 minutes. Then wrap in a kitchen towel for five minutes and peel hot.

Can chestnuts be frozen?

Yes. Briefly blanch (5 minutes in boiling water), let cool, peel, and freeze. This way they last about a year.

What is the shipping cost for the chestnuts?

Within Switzerland from CHF 7. Shipping is free for orders over CHF 250.
